Running In The Rain(Forest)

July 24, 2012

Today shaped up that I got only get one workout in. Due to recovery from last night’s grueling soccer match, rather than combining workouts, I split the difference. Instead of the scheduled 4-miler in the morning and 3-miler this evening, I just ran a 5-miler in the rain this morning. Here’s raw data:

Distance: 5 miles

Time: 44:27 (8:53/mile)

As I was running through the gentle rain, I got a little sense of what it might be like to run through a rainforest…with pavement. The picture below is part of the trail in sunny times.

I’m fortunate to live where I do. Despite the brutal winters, this area does all it can to encourage an active lifestyle. In the city of Minneapolis, there are more than 50 miles of off-street trails and over 30 miles of dedicated bike lanes on city streets. Minneapolis is known as the “City of Lakes” and Minnesota is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes“. The western suburb I live in, Plymouth, has many high quality lakes, parks and trails. I have multiple 10+ mile out routes I can go where the most I have to run on a street is the 1/2 mile it takes to run through my sleepy, quiet neighborhood to get to the trails. I say all of this because I really appreciated running today through the rainy beauty and splendor that is  home for me.

Tomorrow’s Workout:

9 miles in the AM

3 miles in the PM

This post makes me smile. Written proof that you don’t want to leave this fine state of Minnesota!

  2. There are other places that can give me similar joy.
